Prostate Cancer Testing

Prostate cancer cannot be detected for certain by your GP, but there are tests your GP can do. However there are other tests that can be undertaken by a specialist (Urologist)

PSA Testing

A PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood stream. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, which is a protein made by the prostate gland.

Ultrasound Scan

An ultrasound scan can help doctors see if there is a cancer in the prostate. The test involves inserting an ultrasound probe into the rectum. Ultrasound pictures are then taken of the Prostate Gland, which maybe used as a guide for a Prostate Biopsy.

Prostate Biopsy

A Prostate Biopsy lets doctors actually find out if there is anything wrong with your prostate. The test is done through the rectum, as this is the only way of getting to the Prostate. Small pieces are taken from the prostate gland and sent to the laboratory for testing.
