Do you get all the help and support you need from outside your family circle?

OR

Do you get your support from your family and friends?

OR

Do you get your support from a charity or support group?

OR

Do you get your support from your GP and your Consultants team?

The link below is from the BBC news last week and has comments from patients including myself on how we handled that initial diagnosis.

I can understand that at the beginning when you are undergoing testing that it is daunting having to update everyone – in fact when my wife was very ill recently she thought the only way she could let everyone know at once was to take out a page in a national newspaper or have it on the news! We eventually decided to text everyone at once! You also have the problem that if you omit to tell someone one of the updates on your health that they are upset and it could cause arguments. However, I think it good to tell people once that stage is over. Though you will still get lots of people then telling you what you should and shouldn’t do because they read it somewhere but that is something you have to learn to live with – but it is trying. I also had a friend who died at 58 from prostate cancer who didn’t even tell his wife until a matter of days before he died! It was then a rush to get wills made and bank accounts sorted out and arranging for his daughter to come home from abroad. I personally told everyone I was having a biopsy and then waited until they asked me how that had gone and told them in turn eventually telling everyone a month or so after -even those who didn’t care enough to ask lol.
